2025 NHL Draft Scouting Report: Cole Reschny

Cole Reschny will draw a lot of attention this year. Despite his smaller stature, which puts him at a disadvantage compared to other prospects in the 2025 NHL Draft, the center is one of the most talented forwards in the group. His performance with the Victoria Royals last year at 16 years old clearly demonstrates this, with 59 points in 61 games. We can also highlight his performances during the U17 in November 2023 (8 points in 7 games) and the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup (7 points in 5 games) last August with Team Canada.

He can do everything, and at a much higher pace than average. Typically, this ability distinguishes exceptional players from those who are talented but not extraordinary. The Canadian forward is that good. When the left-handed player steps on the ice, you always hope he has the puck. Why? Because something always happens when he’s the one controlling the play.

Cole Reschny and Gavin McKenna: An Explosive Duo

To describe how he deceives opponents, one can point to Cole Reschny’s fluid hands, sharp directional changes, or his shoulder and edgework However, I prefer to define him as a prospect who will exploit what’s presented to him and who will manipulate opponents into giving him what he wants.

With Gavin McKenna at the U17 in November 2023, the two teammates were a problem for opposing teams. However, it was often Cole Reschny who controlled the pace and stood out compared to his young line-mate. He could be seen multiplying passes and making plays in traffic quickly, making his actions as difficult as possible for the opponents to counter.

Their chemistry allowed them to find each other all over the ice without needing to look much. It’s true that Gavin McKenna’s talent is exceptional, but I’m not ready to say that Cole Reschny’s level was entirely due to the future first overall pick of the 2026 NHL draft. The two prospects simply complemented each other, and this was also evident at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in the short time they played together.

Cole Reschny Will Be One to Watch

In short, you can understand that he’s a prospect I’m particularly keeping an eye on for the 2025 NHL Draft. Especially considering his consistency and the fact that he can be used defensively without too much concern. He’s not necessarily a future Selke Trophy candidate, but Cole Reschny is involved, and his anticipation skills greatly help him break up opposing plays.

We lament his 5’10 » stature, but he’s grown at least an inch in the past year. So, we might hope for a 5’11 » height at maturity. Moreover, when a player is as talented as he is, I don’t think it should diminish him compared to bigger players who can’t contain him. He will just need to work a bit harder to gain muscle and use his intelligence in confrontations. With his current weight of 183 lbs, it’s not something that personally worries me.

Ranking for the 2025 NHL Draft

In my recently released preliminary list for the 2025 NHL Draft, Cole Reschny is ranked 6th, ahead of some interesting names like Michael Misa and Ivan Ryabkin. Is it too high? It could be, but I believe the young player is in the same tier as them and will prove it during the season.

I just hope his impact with the Victoria Royals will remain as significant as it was last year and that he will continue to progress in all areas of hockey. His Hlinka-Gretzky performance went well, but I can’t say it was an outright success. He was primarily used on the wing, and it wasn’t as brilliant as when he played center. So, I’m not putting much emphasis on that tournament. I’m just making a few mental notes on certain things to watch over the coming months.
