2025 NHL Draft Scouting Report: Émile Guité

At the beginning of last season with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, I had a lot of difficulty appreciating Émile Guité. The second overall pick in the 2023 QMJHL Draft only stood out due to his lack of impact on the ice. In this regard (the lack of impact), he was consistent. In every other aspect, the Quebec native was simply lost. Everything was moving too fast for the young player to perform effectively.

Fortunately, gradually, with Yannick Jean’s emphasis on patience, we saw the young player regain his game, and the action began to slow down in his mind. Émile Guité seemed freer on the ice and more capable of showcasing his talent alongside his teammates Alex Huang, Nathan Lecompte, and Jonathan Prud’homme, who were drafted after him by the Saguenéens.

A Tournament That Changed Everything for Émile Guité

In November, the winger was sent to the U17 Team Canada (Team White). His tournament went exceptionally well alongside his former teammate Caleb Desnoyers, who was selected just ahead of him in 2023. With 10 points, including 7 goals, in 8 games during the tournament, the 6-foot-1, 174-pound forward caused nightmares for opposing goalies.

He returned to Chicoutimi transformed, with a gold medal around his neck. The prospect found his touch again and became the player the Saguenéens had expected. His positioning was more effective, his shot regained its accuracy, his physicality was more noticeable, and he was much less lagging behind than before.

Émile Guité never looked back, winning the Rookie of the Year title in the league with 57 points, including 25 goals, in 61 games. He also added 4 points in 8 postseason games before being eliminated by Cape Breton in the second round.

The Goal Scorer

The prospect is primarily a sharpshooter. His shot is devastating. Whether receiving a pass, from the point, close to the net, with or without a screen, the winger surprises with the minimal space he needs to unleash a laser. When the puck is directed towards him in the offensive zone, we know that most of the time it will lead to a shot towards the net that is likely to result in rebounds or goals.

His talent for handling inaccurate passes is truly outstanding. This indicates that his hand-eye coordination is of high caliber. With additional weight on his relatively slender frame, he could potentially become a power forward, showcasing his talent in traffic. If Émile Guité develops this aspect and we see him drive towards the net more as he reaches professional hockey, he could become a significant asset for an NHL team.

I also appreciate that we have seen him regularly use his reputation as a goal scorer to control the puck on offense. He uses his opponents’ apprehension to catch them off guard by faking a shot and then passing the puck to an open teammate.

Ranking for the 2025 NHL Draft

This season, I hope to see him more versatile on the ice. I’m not saying that I want Émile Guité to become a player who excels in both directions, but I hope his impact will be more consistent from the start of the campaign. The Saguenéens will need him in the coming years as they aim for top honors within 2 years.

I expect to see the Quebec native closely trailing Caleb Desnoyers in the 2025 NHL Draft. If he doesn’t surpass him, it’s not a big deal, as I believe the top 20 is within reach. Scoring goals is the most difficult thing in the NHL. When it is your main skill and you have an acceptable size, it gives you significant advantages with recruiters.
