2025 NHL Draft Scouting Report: William Moore
William Moore’s profile is extremely intriguing for professional hockey. Last year, with the U.S. National U17 Team Development Program, he recorded 43 points in 50 games, ranking 3rd on his team behind Cullen Potter and Conrad Fondrk.
Despite having an advantageous size (6 feet 2 inches), the young prospect is still quite slender. Though, it is easy to infer that William Moore’s physical development is just beginning. Once he matures, he will be better positioned to increase his impact in games, as he already likes to engage in traffic and get his hands dirty. The American displays a style that scouts are keen on, which could place him quite high on their lists during the season.
William Moore : The Power Forward
On the ice, his style is fairly straightforward. He is a forward who operates in a straight line and doesn’t complicate things unnecessarily. The young player has an excellent shot that he can release quickly from a confined space. He usually positions himself close to the net and tries to be an option for his teammates as much as possible to exploit his obvious strengths in traffic.
Yes, he’s a center capable of creating plays and delivering highlights regularly, but finesse is not necessarily his priority. In any case, I don’t believe his speed or explosiveness allows him to prioritize flair. The lack of quickness in his first steps is evident and limits his ability to separate from his opponents. He therefore prefers to delegate and position himself as an option or try to protect the puck as much as possible with his reach and intensity.
Second, Third and Fourth Effort
I must admit that his level of effort is quite interesting. Even if he concedes speed to the player he’s pursuing, he often manages to come away with possession or make the opponent lose the puck due to his second, third, and fourth efforts. It’s the same around the net, where he is seen winning battles to recover rebounds.
He frequently scores big goals, and although he is a good scorer, a significant part of his contribution is due to his heart. It will be important to follow his development over the coming months, especially regarding his mobility and overall strength on the ice. Anticipation is certainly a strength, but at the next level, it won’t be enough for William Moore to play in the top 6 unless it is paired with a bit more speed.
2025 NHL Draft Ranking
William Moore is seen in the first round of most preliminary rankings for the 2025 NHL Draft. In some cases, he even makes it into the top 10, and I must say I’m not opposed to the idea, having him at 14th myself. The young player simply has everything needed to succeed in the NHL. It’s just a matter of refining his explosiveness, or almost.
He should find himself among the top scorers in the U.S. National U18 Team Development Program this season. He will certainly be seen in the top 6 and on the first power play unit, as well as getting time on the penalty kill. The player who will move on to Boston College after his junior stint should be kept an eye on.
